Van will soon have twenty grand he needs for Elena, a gift from Jethro! Both Judd and Loretta are alarmed to find that all Van had to do for this was sign a piece of paper. Pascalle is going through her testimony with Bailey but is now blaming herself for Gerard’s actions. Bailey is alarmed. Cheryl is worried when her cell gets searched and she’s called to see Andrea – with Draska. Andrea is aware that inmates are using drugs: Cheryl and Draska are her prime suspects. They aren’t about to say anything but Cheryl is alarmed when Draska is left alone with Andrea. Cheryl is prepared to tough it out, but Bailey is worried. Jethro promises to deal with both Cheryl and Pascalle. Cheryl now finds that there is a bunk in her cell. Draska denies being a narc but because she said nothing: she now has to share with Cheryl. Cheryl complains and makes it clear that she has nothing to say, but Andrea makes it clear that the punishment will continue. Cheryl is aware that this is Andrea’s not-so-cunning plan to get her or Draska to crack and inform on the other. Draska is pissed off and they have the first point of agreement ever: they both hate Andrea. They both enjoy annoying her and when Draska has a final stash of hash, Cheryl thinks of a fun way to dispose of it – bake it into a batch of brownie.

She never ever got how great he is and how much he’s done for her and I really hate her for that. - Pascalle

Jethro is angry at being hassled by Loretta and Judd over the document Van signed. A loan document with onerous terms. Loretta is also piqued that the finance company has a similar name to the company that owns the brothel building. Jethro is not prepared to answer questions and deals to Cheryl – who’s impressed that he’s such a caring son. Loretta has twigged that Jethro is systematically buying the family’s loyalty and demands that Judd assist to dig the dirt. Jethro soothes Pascalle and offers support and a holiday and reminds her that this is all for Mum. He also gives the money to Van. Loretta has more clues about what Jethro is up to and starts to investigate his financial backer, as Judd furthers his enquiries at Booty Call. This confirms that Jethro is a loan shark, who takes people’s assets and businesses. Van is thrown but Grandpa is furious, especially when he finds that Jethro’s partner is none other than Tony Wu. Grandpa castigates Jethro but he defends that this is the new face of crime and it’s not even illegal. Judd tells Van to return the money and makes an offer with no strings as Jethro takes revenge on Loretta by upping the brothel rent. But now Pascalle arrives upset. After another round of working on her testimony with Bailey and being guilted about Cheryl, Pascalle can’t take anymore. Loretta sees that Pascalle is a woman on the verge and takes her concerns to Judd. He decides it’s time to man up, but he needs Pascalle’s consent for what he is about to do.

Cheryl is stoned with Draska and they are almost getting on when Loretta rings with news about Jethro. Van returns the money as Loretta calls to warn Jethro about the wrath of Cheryl. Jethro visits his mother expecting recrimination – instead she wants to know if he knew. He is confused, but she then reveals that Judd has come to see her and is in love with someone else – Pascalle. Jethro is almost delighted at the news, which will reverse his fortunes. And he is now sure Grandpa he will be going home.

And now the lovers are parted – as Judd feels he has to leave West House. The shit is only just beginning to hit the fan . . .

Why me?

Why me?

How come I am the one who ends up with the big family secret? I am clearly the least suited person in the world to be entrusted with a big big secret, yet here I am, the one with this big steaming turd of a secret dumped in my lap. Thanks a fucking bunch.

I blame Pascalle for her stupidity in telling me. You’d think, after all these years and all the times in the past where she’s spilled the beans and I have; (a) tortured her and (b) profited from it, that she would know better. But clearly not, as the giant turd in my lap will testify.

I have suspected for some time that Pascalle has the brain of a goldfish, and I now know this to be true. She has clearly forgotten all those times when she begged me not to tell Mum when I caught her sneaking out to root some boy, yet – strangely – Mum would always be waiting for her when she snuck in. She has clearly forgotten the incident where the photos I found of her and Corinna Balani pashing on a dare and which I swore I would never show to anyone, somehow strangely ended up on notice-boards all over Shadbolt High.

Pascalle, obviously, is an idiot who has forgotten that the ‘Wests never dob’ rule applies only to our dealings with the police and other authority figures. Within the walls of West-world if you have knowledge of a secret, then it is your right to use that secret to gain something over your rival/sister/bother/other family member. Pascalle, therefore, deserves everything she gets for kindly sharing her big secret with me.

If I tell, that is.

Shit.

Normally, the good thing about secrets ending up in your lap is that there is a way to profit from them.

But with this secret, I’m not seeing where the profit is in it.

Not yet, anyway.

Desperate Undertakings

Van has managed to save a whole six hundred dollars so Elena can repay her debt to Roy and be free. Elena is touched but Van now gets the bad news that the debt is more like twenty grand. Van is thrown but vows to get the money. So when Munter has a very special job for two grand, Van is keen to take it even when it is replacing the bogs of carnage – the Rusty Nail toilets. Van also receives the sacred key. Eric and Grandpa are getting sick of Van’s tightwad ways but are inspired to hear about Van’s new gig. Van is horrified to find Grandpa, Eric and Falani helping themselves to free booze but they point out that the security cameras at the Rusty don’t work. Van finds this to be true but still ejects the freeloaders. Jethro is surprised to see Van working so hard but he and Munter are both pleased that Van is over the Russian girl. And now Munter has marvellous news for Van. He managed to get the owner of the Rusty to convert the two grand into a three grand bar tab for the Tools! Van is upset and Munter is worried when he finds Van’s obsession is not over. To make matters worse Van finds that Grandpa has stolen his six hundy to invest on a horse in the Melbourne Cup. Van completes the labours of Hercules: i.e. the new bogs – but as he does so he notices the Rusty Nail safe. He wakes Grandpa with a brilliant idea. Munter wakes Jethro with the disturbing news that Van is not over the Russian chick. Van will not be dissuaded by Jethro, and Jethro now picks up some clues. So as Grandpa and Van rob the Rusty safe, the job is interrupted by Jethro and Munter. Van argues that he’s desperate, but Jethro offers another alternative: he will give the money to Van. Munter is still annoyed that Van would take this risk for a chick he hardly knows but Van reveals that his tryst with Elena ended in sex. She really loves him.

You can’t buy another person Van. - Jethro

Loretta is not enjoying the domestic drudgery of being a madam as there is a crisis: Jane has been expelled from Totally Tots for hitting another kid with a hammer. Judd finds Pascalle babysitting Jane and she admits that working together is difficult – as indignant parents Hayden and Loretta take on the head teacher, Sophie. It emerges that the real reason Jane has been deemed unsuitable is that there has been a complaint about the profession of her parents. Hayden is angry but Loretta sees a more practical problem – work and caring for Jane. Pascalle rides into the breach with an offer to fill in at the brothel. Loretta finds this curious but Pascalle claims that detective work has got boring. Cheryl demands that Jane be defended but Loretta has found an upside to the situation: Pascalle is a godsend at the brothel. But she’s also noticed tension between Judd and Pascalle. But now Pascalle pursues detective work to find out who complained about Hayden and Loretta. Her theory is that it came from a client who was worried about his own activities being exposed. This is proved correct and she confronts Sophie about this hypocrisy. Loretta is not impressed that Pascalle used blackmail, but also curious that a) Pascalle is doing the detective work she claims to hate – and b) has she had a fight with Wayne? Then Aaron Spiller fills Loretta in on his theory about the sick and icky crush and Loretta can’t help but needle Pascalle as she tries to get her to work fulltime at the brothel. At this Pascalle is alarmed and denies that anything is going on anymore between her and Wayne. At this the penny drops and Loretta discovers Pascalle’s secret. Pascalle begs Loretta not to tell.

Loretta now visits Cheryl, who is keen for news from home. Loretta supplies some bits and pieces, but doesn’t reveal the biggest news of all . . .
