Just wondering what other people think of Yanks buying the idea of Outrageous Fortune? It's really great that the show is so succesful, especially being a Kiwi show, but man, how many ideas do they have to take? The Office, Kath and Kim and now Outrageous, and none can be as good as the real thing! It seems like America can only make crappy sitcoms and shitty crime dramas and anything else they have to buy from other people! Your thoughts?

Not all their shows are crap. Sure they remake some shows from other countries but so do we for example Stars in their eyes and NZ idol.

Yeah im not to sure about it but i do think that any other rip/off of "Outrageous Fortune" would be CRAP!!!!!!
Its a kiwi show & it should stay that way!!!!!!!

Yeah definitely not all their shows are crap, that was a broad generalisation, but I think it's a fair point to make that all the shows NZ has bought the ideas from are very much crappy. Really bad. Some things are better left alone, American Idol is really popular in America but NZ Idol hasn't worked out so well here. So why take something good such as Outrageous and Americanise it! But I think a British version could work. But you never know, maybe they'll do a good job. Good on the creator though, he must be stoked that he's so succesful!

That's a very unfair generalization. The US makes a LOT of shows. Not all work, and sometimes it makes sense to take an idea that has proven successful elsewhere and and try that. But what works in NZ isn't going to work everywhere. Different cultures have difference mindsets and senses of humor.

You've also got to take into consideration the sheer volume of TV that the US produces. The 4.5 networks have to fill 3 hours of prime time, six nights a week, for about 35 weeks. There are also a handful of other stations (FX, AMC, TNT, etc.) that are putting out quality shows.

Looking at the nightly NZ tv schedule, I see a LOT of US shows being broadcast, so apparently your fellow countrymen don't agree with your blanket assessment of American TV.

BTW - The US version of The Office was (still is) superior to the UK version. US remakes of imports are more bad than good, but if you don't like the US The Office, I think you're going to be hard to please with anything.

The title of this show sounds crap, same as the british version, the original title is the best ever!!

the title was one of the things that made me more interested in the show at the beginning.

I wonder if Australia will make its own version, probably not because we are so close to NZ but the show has not been successful in OZ but the storyline would be an excellent idea for an Australian show.

i think some possible reasons why the show hasn't been very popular in
Aussie because a lot of people likely don't understand it. A lot of the things in it mostly relate to New Zealand, plus a lot of Aussies laugh at your accents.
  1.
I'm an aussie with absolutely no kiwi roots, but with a bit of research I understand most of the show...

I think it is a bad bad bad idea if the US try remake OF!! It would be so stupid! Obviously the UK failed why do they have to try? NZ ruined Idol I think I mean I liked it when it was just American Idol then we ruined it and now I can't even watch American Idol anymore. I don't want that to happen with OF fans. Leave our show alone make up ya own :(

Nothing will be "ruined". No one is going to NZ and mucking with OF. For various good reasons, OF isn't shown in the US, so no one there knows anything about it. If/when it IS made and shown, 98% of Americans won't even know that it's a remake. It will fail or succeed on its own merits, but I don't see how it will have ANY effect on the original.

You can't watch American Idol because NZ Idol ruined it for you? That whole concept escapes me. Maybe you don't like American Idol anymore because Reality tv and games shows are a total waste of time and you simply saw the light.

Hey I just did some research on IMDB on this American abomination.

They changed a lot of the names so it's kind of hard to tell who is who.

But from what I can discern, Munter's character is going to be called,,,

    Get this now " Cozy-boy"

That might be enough to squelch any interest in this at all.

The only cast member that has done anything is Jeffery Tambor from arrested development. I never heard of anyone else in this.

It would be nice if it was any good, but I highly doubt it.

Probably worse than "Honest" which I don't find terribly good or bad. But it's bad when held up to Outrageous fortune.

I had to join this site finally because of a statement enchant said. - "Nothing will be "ruined". No one is going to NZ and mucking with OF. For various good reasons, OF isn't shown in the US, so no one there knows anything about it. If/when it IS made and shown, 98% of Americans won't even know that it's a remake." - found this funny because I am from the U.S and love this show. But like enchant said, there is probably about only 2% of us over here who happen to know what this show is. So I think if it's going to bad it will do it on it's own. But since I saw it I don't think it will do as good as the original. Maybe because I am used OF who knows. But I must say from what I've seen on IMDB the mother who is suppose to be Cheryl she is a good actress and might be able to pull it off pretty good. The girl who I think is suppose to be loretta though not sure because she is blonde so she might be Pascalle. I think she would do a good Loretta but I can't picture her as a Pascalle. But like I said since I personally seen the original I don't know if I could watch this remake.

Gary Cole will be playing Wolf's part - the family patriarch. I can see him in that part.
    http://www.zap2it.com/tv/news/zap-garycoleabcpilotcasting,0,7117423.story

Mae Whitman looks like she'll be playing Loretta. I haven't seen that much of her work, so I don't know if she's a good fit.
    http://buzzsugar.com/1575650

That would mean that Kirsten Bell would be playing Pascalle. She sure has the looks for it, but this part would be polar opposite to what she's famous for in the past. It would be interesting.

Well the girl who will play Loretta she does look close to her character but I'm not familiar with her myself. Gary Cole is a good actor I can see him doing a good job at the part. Kirsten Bell was the girl I was thinking of. I'm not sure about her. She has the looks but I can't see her playing that role. The orginial Pascalle is the best.

Mae Whitman the one who will be playing Loretta was in the movie "Hope Floats" & "One Fine Day"...

Kirsten Bell was in the show "Veronica Mars" & is in the show "Heros" as the electricity girl...

Hope Floats sounds really familar but I can't think of what it is about. I'll have to look at that back up. I knew Kristen Bell was in Vernica Mars! Thank you for refreshing my memory!! For the life of me I couldn't think of what show she was on. And she was on Heros too? That I didn't know. Did she have a core role in it or just a few episodes? It will be interesting to see her in this as Pascalle.

Oh really? Geesh it goes to show you how long it's been since I watched Heros. Thanks phatcatt for the info! :-) I need to get back into that show I really liked it. I think this will be a good thing for her it will show off her actinf skills abit as well. Do you guys think that they will show this show over in NZ too? Here is a question I was wondering, how come alot of our shows play over there but your shows don't make it over on our end? I actually worked in tv for awhile and I probably should know the answer to this but I don't. I guess maybe because it might be hard to understand over here? Being that the show is rooted towards NZ culture perhaps? I mean I understand it fine.

The latest scuttlebutt in Hollywood is that Kirsten Bell is probably not likely to be in Good Behavior. Too bad, but who knows...

Non-US shows have typically not done terribly well in the states. I think this is because there is so much US-based stuff that people prefer to watch what they can relate to directly. Some simply can't understand a lot of the accents. I've been watching British, Aussie and Kiwi stuff for a while and don't have much problems, but on some shows, the accents are thicker than others and it's tricky.

Also, the US public is used to watching a LOT of shows during the season. 22/year is generally the minimum, although a few cable shows have been successful with 13 episodes. So networks aren't optimistic about a show that has only 6 episodes. Yeah, I know there are exceptions (like OF!), but not that many.

Enchant where are you from anyways?? I thought you were in NZ but now I'm not sure lol. I had a slight problem when I first started watching OF with understanding certain accents and slang but by the 3rd episode I was fine. But I think your right. With hollywood and it's high productions I guess there isn't room for any international shows here. But I like watching international shows. I like hearing different slangs. Seeing different land scapes and cultures and accents.

Autumn, I'm from Boston. I completely agree with you about the different landscapes, cultures and accents. With nothing but cheesy reality dreck on tv, my wife and I are watching The Invisibles (UK), Canal Road (Aussie) , Kimi wa Petto (subtitled Japanese) and Matroesjka's (subtitled Flemmish/Russian).

I get sick of the same thing coming out of Hollywood season after season. Some of it's good, some of it's awful, but it's rarely original.

I think that the producers in Hollywood understand this, but to some extent, there's little getting around the problem. Writers who are brought up in the US culture can't help but write what they're used to. And I believe that this is part of the reason for the recent overwhelming surge in US remakes of foreign imports. We're having trouble coming up with different ideas, so we need a completely different outlook.
  4.
Ah Matroesjka, that's the drama on the European sex industry isn't it?

SBS showed it and marketed it under the name "Russian Dolls" last year. SBS make stacks of english subtitles for foreign programs, they're based in Australia. Check out the copyright on the credits.

Enchant - That is exactly one of the many reasons why I think I have been watching more and more international things. Like you said alot of what hollywood is pumping out these days is reality show, after reality show. I am so sick of reality shows I could scream. I think the only one I somewhat will watch is American Idol. Other then that I haven't really gotten into a lot of our prime time shows in a long time. I have been watching anime alot more lately too. I prefer the subtitled ones over the ones we get. They have some really good story lines. I have not heard of the ones you mentioned but would be interested in checking them out. Where did you get these shows?

I download all my tv from Usenet newsgroups. It's very hit-or-miss, but sometimes a gem comes through, and the bigger international shows like OF get posted pretty quickly, like within 24 hours of the original airtime.

The only reality show I'll watch is Meercat Manor.

Ran across another Good Behavior tidbit... The show is going to be based in the greater Las Vegas area. Seems like an appropriate location for small time criminals.

Usenet is part of the internet, but not a part of the web. It actually predates the web by about six years or so. It started out as a simple online bulletin board with various topics - bicycling, photography, dating, etc., but now there are a lot of "binary" newsgroups where everything is posted - software, music, movies, tv, etc. It would take forever to explain the whole thing, but to get an idea of what's out there, visit this link:

    http://v3.newzbin.com/browse/category/p/tv/

Every day, new stuff gets posted, and old stuff (1-3 months old) expires. At the top of the page, you can search for "outrageous" and see that there's a lot available.

Now bear in mind that you can't download anything from here. Usenet isn't part of the web.

Agreed enchant, i'm also a big defender/worshipper of The Office (American), not that I don't love both versions anyway.  But you simply can't take a show like OF and apply it in a completely different context, as a lot of you have already mentioned, the kiwiana aspect of this show is irreplacable. Same boat as Kath and Kim, that is far too much of an Australian show to be adapted elsewhere. It's a stretch to try and extract a show set in West Auckland, NZ, and try and replant it in the Westside of Los Angeles (or wherever the hell this is going to be set).
