Claire Chitham

Claire Chitham is best-known to New Zealanders as Shortland Street’s loveable Waverley Wilson but her performance as feisty gang-chick Aurora in series two of OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE demonstrated her range as an actor.

Claire first joined the ‘Street’ in 1994 when Waverley was a guest character. She returned in 1997 and stayed for eight years becoming one of the show’s longest-serving actors.

After leaving Shortland Street in 2004 Claire took on a number of theatre roles: Up For Grabs (Auckland Theatre Company), Jacques Brel is Alive and Living in Paris, Tape (SiLo Theatre) and had a guest role on Prime TV’s police drama Interrogation.

That part won Claire the award for Best Supporting Actress at the 2006 Air New Zealand Screen Awards.

Other theatre credits include Play 2 with the Auckland Theatre Company in 2003 and a number of amateur productions such as: Penny Blue, The Sisters Rosenberg, The Elephant Man and Dolphin Theatre.

Claire Chitham played Aurora Bay.

Q&A with Claire Chitham

  • Marnie asks Claire: I just have to say that your character Aurora has been my absolute favourite character i’ve ever seen on any movie, series or show. I truly respect you and the integrity you brought to such a gritty role and utterly love the brilliant and sweet beauty you’ve brought to such a gutsy character. We’ve just seen the last episode of your death here in Oz and it will truly stay with me for a long time. You truly have a gift Claire and I genuinely and eagerly anticipate seeing you in your next role. Thank you for being such a cool chick!

Wow! What a huge compliment. Thank you so much Marnie.. Was truly a pleasure to get to explore such a strong, interesting character. I’m not sure I’ll get the chance to play anyone like her again which is such a bummer..

Leather, bad boys and biker gangs was so much fun!! Thanks for your support and let’s hope there’s a chance for lots more Aurora-style girls on screen in the future..

    Hi Ashlee,

Thank you for your lovely email! I’m glad you enjoyed her. If you live in Aussie then there is a new series called Canal Road starting on Channel Nine sometime this year and I appear in the first episode of that. It’s definitely a bit of fun.

Thanks for taking the time to write,

    Cheers…Claire x

  • Paula Couper asks: hi me and my friend are too broke to buy magazines and missed out on reason why claire left show, please tell us why.

    Answer from the producers:

As James Griffin explained in his interview on Campbell Live (http://www.tv3.co.nz/VideoBrowseAll/CampbellLiveVideo/tabid/367/articleID/31846/Default.aspx#video), Outrageous Fortune is a show about breaking the rules. The characters do it all the time. And the writers deliberately “broke” the rules by killing off the “fairy princess” of Outrageous Fortune. ie. Aurora, who was one of the audience’s favourite characters.

Since she finished shooting Outrageous Fortune a few months ago, Claire did her short stint on Neighbours and also worked on a new Australian drama series called Canal Road. She is starring in a play called The Real Thing at Auckland’s SiLo Theatre which runs from Aug 31-Sept 29, 2007.

  • Carly asks Claire: I’m curious as to why Aurora got killed off? I thought her and Van were only halfway through their love story…?
